EVENING PRIMROSE OIL – OENOTHERA BIENNIS

“Evening Primrose Oil – derived from the seeds of the Oenothera biennis plant, has long been revered for its potential health benefits and beneficial skincare properties. This oil is a potent source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health. It has been shown to promote clear skin and reduce acne.”

Evening primrose oil, or EPO, has a long history of topical use outside of cosmetics. Previously, Native Americans made poultices from the plant for wounds. They also applied juice from the stem and leaves to rashes, bites, or bruises (1).

Evening primrose oil is exceptionally high in linolenic acid (70-74%) and γ-linolenic acid (8-10%). These are anti-inflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been demonstrated to prevent loss of water through the epidermis. At the same time, they improve skin softness and elasticity (2).

A deficiency of linoleic acid can cause a deterioration in the protective layers of the epidermis. These deficiencies are commonly seen in patients with dermatitis, eczema, or cystic acne. GLA (γ-linolenic acid) supplementation or topical application was found to reduce both inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin lesions (3).

Evening primrose oil is non-comedogenic, and does not clog pores.
