PALM OIL – ELAEIS GUINEENSIS

“Palm oil, derived from the fruits of Elaeis guineensis, has become widely used in cosmetics and skincare products. Palm oil provides moisturizing advantages for dry skin conditions while offering anti-inflammatory properties to alleviate irritation.”

Palm oil is a common ingredient in skincare products, but it may be challenging to locate under an ingredient list, as products will rarely list ‘palm oil.’

Rather, palm oil is found as an emulsifier, glycerol, or coco-derivative. Coco-glucoside and cocamide DEA/MEA are both used to thicken liquid solutions. Cetyl alcohol and decyl glucoside can be derived from either coconut oil or palm oil.

Palm oil is derived from the fruit, Elaeis guineensis, of palm trees, grown commonly in regions near the equator. While palm oil is the most abundantly used oil in the world, it is relatively cheap, easy to produce, odorless, colorless, and naturally high in vitamin E content.

Palm oil naturally contains several essential fatty acids, including palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and stearic acid (1). Palm oil is rich in carotenoids and phytosterols, which protect cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Tocotrienol-rich (vitamin E) palm oil protects the brain and other organs against oxidative damage (2).

Palm oil may help reduce moisture loss and can offset the harsh, stripping nature of many skincare products (3).
