SESAME OIL – SESAMUM INDICUM

“Derived from the seeds of Sesamum indicum, sesame oil is valued for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Sesame oil is naturally antibacterial, moisturizing, rejuvenating, and skin balancing ”

Sesame oil is known for its high degree of resistance to oxidation and rancidity, making it an attractive oil for use in cosmetics and skincare products. It can be used to protect from UV-B rays, premature aging, acne, redness, psoriasis, and skin pigmentation.

Sesame oil is rich in antioxidants sesamin and sesamolin. These bioactive components help to enhance the stability of the oil and promote anti-carcinogenic activity. Seamen and sesamolin are two substances unique to sesame oil and belong to a category called lignans (1).

Topical sesame oil was found to reduce systemic oxidative stress. In a comparative study, sesame oil reduced lipid peroxidation, hydroxyl radical levels, and superoxide anion. Sesame oil did not impact circulating antioxidants. It also decreased nitric oxide production, reducing proinflammatory markers through topical application (2).

Acne is a common skin condition. Sesame oil, derived from Sesamum indicum, effectively soothes acne-prone skin by reducing redness, swelling, and inflammation while also regulating sebum production. Sesame oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, making it useful against skin pathogens like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus (3).
