VITAMIN A – RETINYL PALMITATE/ RETINOL

VITAMIN A – RETINYL PALMITATE/ RETINOL

Retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) is the normal form used for application on the skin and has moisturizing capabilities.

Vitamin A

“Vitamin A is an essential nutrient. It has powerful antioxidant effects, which help to protect against free radical damage and environmental pollutants. Beta-carotene is one major source.”

Research demonstrates that Vitamin A, in the form of retinyl palmitate, can protect against UV rays. Retinyl esters concentrate in the skin epidermis, and act by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. (1).

UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun are commonly responsible for signs of premature aging.

Retinol is a close relative to retinyl palmitate. Vitamin A esters like retinyl palmitate have a three-step conversion process to become retinoic acid, while retinol only has one. This makes retinol more effective, but less suitable for sensitive skin.

Retinyl palmitate is usually the form you will find vitamin A supplements in, as it is much more stable than retinol. This makes it easier to use, providing a longer shelf life for supplements and cosmetics (2).

Vitamin A retinoids play a vital role in promoting cell renewal. This can help to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin A is one of many essential nutrients that not only promotes healthy skin, but also protects the integrity and function of the immune system.
